Style: Alternative/Rock
CD Title: Underneath
Average 9 was formed in the summer of 1996 from the ashy remains
of no less than four different Mid-Missouri/Southwest Missouri bands.
When the final lineup was complete, which meant moving Rob from bass to
guitar, and bringing Steve in on the bass, the band went into the studio
that summer to record and mix eight songs that would end up on their self
released CD called Underneath.
Musically, the songs are diverse, pulling from the bands pool of
abilities and influences. Songs such as I DON'T CARE and NOT THIS TIME
explore the heavier side of the band while other songs such as FATE,
UNDERNEATH, and FALSE PROPHET are just solid rockers. But, let us not
forget Average 9's sentimentaly twisted balled IF MARY COULD FLY. Is it a
sad song or a happy song? You decide?
With the new CD pressed and packaged, the band set out to play a
list of club shows that took them to the places such as Marceline, MO,
Baldwin City, KS, Columbia, MO, and Kansas City, MO. As happy as the band
was to make return dates to most of the clubs/venues, the highlight of the
mini-tour was landing an opening spot for the band Econoline Crush at
Columbia's Blue Note. Average 9 slowed down in 1998 to begin writing for
their second CD. Occasional gigs at Columbia's Thirsty Turtle help keep
the rust off the strings and everything in tune. 1998 saw, or rather
heard, two of Average 9's songs, FATE and IF MARY COULD FLY on college
radio at Baker University in Baldwin City,KS and on public radio station,
KOPN in Columbia, MO.
Average 9, along with other local and regional acts, were asked
to submit a song for the Space 380 compilation CD, Transmission One.
After much discussion, voting, re-voting, and some drinking, the song FATE
was chosen to represent the band on the compilation CD. Thanks to Mat
for supporting local artists, for getting us involved in this project, and
for welcoming us into the Space 380 family.
Currently, the band is woking on their next CD. Several songs are
written and with any luck, and several bucks, a new CD should be available
in early 2000. Our current CD, Underneath, can be purchased through Space
380 or from any Streetside Records.
